Asian Games Fun Run in Sri Lanka

Over three
hundred children sprinted to the finish line at Independence
Square in Colombo on Saturday 4th June as part of the Official
Asian Games Fun Run which celebrated sport in Asia and
highlighted the 15th Asian Games Doha 2006.
The event
organised by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), the National
Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka and the Western Province
Education Ministry, featured fun runs for three different age
groups of children ranging from nine to twelve years.
Each child that
took part received a limited edition Asian Games Fun Run
T-shirt and cap as well as a certificate from the OCA. The
sporting enthusiasm shown by the youngsters created a buzzing
atmosphere and great fun was had by all including the
Honorable Mr. Jeevan Kumaratunga, Minister of Sports and Youth
affairs, who attended the event.
Bronze, Silver
and Gold medals were presented to the winners of each of the 3
age groups by the Honorable Mr. Jeevan Kumaratunga, Minister
of Sports and Youth affairs, and the Honorable Mr. Sripathi
Sroriya Arachchi, Deputy Minister of sports and Youth Affairs.
The event
attracted wide-spread press attention and was featured on
local TV stations ITN and Swarnavahani the same day.
Dinamina and the Daily News, the Sri Lankan Daily newspapers,
were also present to capture all the action.
