29th Official Asian Games Fun Run in Darussalam, Brunei

Over four hundred children braved the damp weather and
sprinted to the finish line at Hassanal Bolkiah National
Stadium, on Sunday 27th August, as part of the 29th Official
Asian Games Fun Run. The Fun Run celebrated sport in Asia
and highlighted the 15th Asian Games Doha 2006.
Organised by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and the
Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council and Sports
Federation the Fun Run consisted of three groups of children
including boys aged 9 – 10 years, 11 – 12 years and girls
aged 13 -14 years.
Guest of honor His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah
who is also the President of Brunei Darussalam National
Olympic Council started races of all categories and also
presented certificates of participation and medals to the
winners.
All the runners took part in a group aerobics warm up to
some up-beat music which got everyone buzzing before heading
to the start line. His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri
Bolkiah and other NOC Brunei dignitaries also joined in the
action and showed off some of their own aerobics skills.
The route of run took the children 2km around the outskirts
of Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, which was also the
stadium used for the South East Asian Games in 1999.
Each child that took part was rewarded with a certificate of
achievement and a limited edition 15th Asian Games T-shirt
from the OCA. There was some fierce competition in each
group with some very close finishes and the winners from
each race were presented with bronze, silver or gold medals
by His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah.
The event attracted wide-spread press attention and was
featured that evening on Radio Television Brunei. Local
daily newspapers including Borneo Bulletin and Media Permata
both in English and Malay language where also present to
capture all the action.
