After ‘brilliant’ Beijing, Vancouver’s going to be ‘great’

25 Jan 2010
Hong Kong, China: After the Summer Spectacular in Beijing, Canada is preparing for a Winter Wonderland on the next stage of the Olympic cycle in Vancouver next month. Speaking at Olympic House in Hong Kong on Monday, Canada’s Consul General, Doreen Steidle, said Beijing had set a new world standard for the Olympic movement with their successful hosting of the 2008 Games, and that Canada was about to entertain the world, too.

“I think you will be amazed at what you see in Vancouver,” she said, after officiating at the flag presentation to the Hong Kong team heading for Vancouver.

“The venues are tremendous and we will see some very competitive sports, especially the rivalry between Canada and China in curling. We should also watch for the speed skating because China is very strong with short track and long track, and also in the freestyle skiing because of their gymnastics training.

“The Beijing Olympics were brilliant, and what we saw in terms of preparation, the Opening Ceremonies…it was really magnificent and set a new world standard.

“Now it’s Canada’s turn – and I think the Winter Olympics in Vancouver are going to be great.”
