NOCs prepare for Winter Olympics

25 Jan 2010
Hong Kong, China: The flag presentation ceremony for the Hong Kong, China delegation to the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games was held on Monday in the Jockey Club Lecture Theatre of Olympic House. The Deputy Secretary for Home Affairs, Jonathan McKinley, presented the flag of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to Victor Hui Chun Fui, Vice President of the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China.

The Vancouver Winter Olympics will take place from February 12-28, and Hong Kong will be represented by just one athlete: Han Yueshuang in women’s short track speed skating. Han, 27, who also competed at the 2006 Torino Winter Games, will enter the 500m, 1,000m and 1,500m in Vancouver.

In his address, Mr Hui said Hong Kong enjoyed a special relationship with Vancouver due to the strong family connections and described the Canadian city as “a home away from home” for the Hong Kong Chinese community.

He added: “Let’s express our support to the Olympic cause in unity as a people and also in solidarity with the thousands of athletes converging on the ice rinks of Vancouver and ski slopes and trails of Whistler.”

NOC President and IOC Member Timothy Fok will lead Hong Kong’s five-strong delegation to Vancouver.
