Oman Sports and Environment Committee participates in the World Day to Combat Desertification

Muscat, Oman: The Omani Sports and Environment Committee of Oman Olympic Committee (OOC) took part in the awareness exhibition organized by the Ministry of Climatic Affairs at City Center Seeb on Tuesday 17 June 2014 as part of celebrations in Oman marking the World Day to Combat Desertification. The exhibition witnessed considerable turnout and the visitors showed interest in familiarizing with the committee’s duties and objectives and its effort to add an environmental dimension to sports activities.

The committee displayed several awareness brochures underlining the committee’s objectives, working mechanisms and achievements. Visitors were briefed on the importance of introducing environmental dimension in various fields of sports activities taking into consideration the strong association between sports and the environment.

The brochures also included information on the Sultanate’s participation in various environmental activities and events and cultural and sports competitions involving athletes in various local environmental celebrations and activities in order to deliver the environmental message to all individuals and segments of the society. The committee has also been keen on adding an environmental dimension to the activities and events staged by the youth encouraging them to exercise Omani traditional games in various environmental occasions and events.

A component of OCC together with other committees, the Omani Sports and Environment Committee aims to develop and consolidate environmental values relating to sports activities among the athletes in order to achieve environmental awareness, conserve natural resources and pursue better environmental behaviors and practices in line with the overall objectives of sustainable development in the Sultanate.

Since its inception, the committee has taken keen interest in fulfilling its objectives and duties by putting in place a working plan for the future with a view to employing the environment and sports for the benefit of sustainable development.
