Vietnam’s ‘Little Mermaid’ swims to fourth athlete of the year award

02 Jan 2018
Hanoi, Vietnam, January 2, 2018: Swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien grabbed her fourth Athlete of the Year award in Vietnam after winning a vote organised in Hanoi and HCM City, reports Vietnam News. Vien, 21, topped the poll with 1,560 points, just 21 points more than her nearest rival, weightlifter Thach Kim Tuan (1,539 points). Sprinter Le Tu Chinh came third with 1,274 points.

Vien convinced voters, about 200 sports journalists, with her great performance at different competitions throughout the year. Apart from medals that she won in the United States, where she is training, Vien was the golden hope of Vietnam in all sports festivals  - and lived up to all expectations to claim her fourth Athlete of the Year award after previous victories in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Nicknamed Vietnam’s “Little Mermaid”, Vien brought home two gold medals and one silver - and set a new record - at the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG) in September in Turkmenistan after swimming to eight gold medals and breaking three records at the South East Asian (SEA) Games in Kuala Lumpur in August.

The award in 2016 went to Rio Olympic champion shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh.
