OCA President ‘very happy’ for PyeongChang 2018

06 Jul 2011
Durban, South Africa: The President of the Olympic Council of Asia, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, has expressed his delight about PyeongChang of Korea winning the right to host the Olympic Winter Games in 2018.

After two near misses for the 2010 and 2014 Games, the Koreans were awarded the Winter Olympics at the 123rd IOC Session in Durban on Wednesday, gaining a clear majority in the first round of voting to see off Munich (Germany) and Annecy (France).

Sheikh Ahmad, an IOC member since 1992, said the success of PyeongChang was another feather in the cap for the Asian continent following the successful staging of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou.

“I am very happy that PyeongChang as an Asian city will host the Olympic Winter Games,” said Sheikh Ahmad.

“That shows the success of Asia in the Olympic Movement after the successful Games in Beijing and Guangzhou.”

Korea will become only the second Asian country to host the Winter Olympics, following Japan with Sapporo in 1972 and Nagano in 1998.
