Sports press aids Japan’s recovery

30 Jun 2011
Tokyo, Japan: The Japan Sports Press Association (JSPA) has received a donation of USD 20,000 (1.6 million yen) from the International Sports Press Association (AIPS). The JSPA sent the money to the three prefectures - Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima – hardest hit by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

As the JSPA wanted to send them roughly the same amount, they added about USD 2,000 to the AIPS donation and sent 600,000 yen to each prefecture at the end of May.

By now, these prefectures have decided to whom and how much they would send the donation and have already started handing out, as first distribution, to the people who lost their families and either had their houses swept away or badly damaged.

In addition, Miyagi prefecture gave the money to those who were physically disabled by the disaster and to orphans.

Fukushima prefecture also distributed funds to the people who had lived close to the crisis-hit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power complex and were forced to move to evacuation sites because of the spread of radioactive substances.

As far as sport in Japan is concerned, it seems that normality has almost resumed.

The JSPA once again would like to thank AIPS and media colleagues around the world for their kindness in helping the Japanese people overcome this tragedy, little by little, day by day.
