8th Bangladesh Games go off with glitz.
Bangladesh NOC reports on sombre closing ceremony

02 May 2013
Dhaka, Bangladesh: The curtains descended on the 8th Bangladesh Games at the Bangabandhu National Stadium with little fanfare on Sunday, April 28, as a mark of respect for the Savar tragedy in which hundreds of garment workers lost their lives in a building collapse, reports the Bangladesh Olympic Association.

Speculation was rife that there would be a low-key closing ceremony to the nine-day event and this proved to be correct as there were no colourful cultural performances or fireworks display in memory of all the people who died in the tragedy.

The 45-minute formal gathering started at 7pm with all the participants marching into the stadium in time for the speech of the Chairman of the Games Organising Committee and also the Finance Minister, Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, MP. The Games mascot, Tirunnya, then departed the stadium, followed by the extinguishing of the Games torch.

The 8th Bangladesh Games were opened on April 20 by the Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.  A total of 7,875 athletes in 31 disciplines competed for 699 gold, 699 silver and 845 bronze medals in 346 events at 27 venues all over Bangladesh.
