Malaysia’s Pandelela dives to bronze medal

09 Aug 2012
London, England: Malaysia had plenty to celebrate at the London Olympic Games on Thursday when diving ace Pandelela Rinong won the bronze medal in the women’s 10-metre platform competition. A star of the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore, the 19-year-old student from Sarawak finished third behind gold medallist and defending champion Chen Ruolin of China and silver medal-winner Brittany Broben of Australia.

Chen outclassed the field with a total score of 422.30 for the five dives in the final, followed by Broben with 366.50. Pandelela, a Sports Science student at Bukit Jalil Sports School near Kuala Lumpur, started poorly with a 58.5 in her first dive and followed up with 78.3 and 64.0. Her last two attempts earned marks of 81.6 and 76.8 for a total of 359.20.

The five divers from second to sixth place were separated by 10.3 points. Earlier in the Olympics, Chen had won the women’s synchronised 10m platform gold with Wang Hao. It was Malaysia’s second medal of London 2012 after Lee Chong Wei had taken the silver in the men’s badminton final behind China’s Lin Dan.
