QOC Secretary General lays foundation stone of Zakhira Centre

HE Sheikh Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Secretary General of the Qatar Olympic Committee, laid the foundation stone of Al Zakhira Youth Centre on Monday. The ceremony was attended by Mr Wilfried Lemke, Special Adviser of United Nations Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace.

Ali Hassan Al Mohannadi, Member of Municipal Council, Dr. Hassan Lahdan Al Mohannadi, and Mr. Khalid Yousif Al Mulla, Director of Youth Public Department in the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage, in addition to a number of QOC officials also attended the event.

The programme included visits to the Museum of Abdullah Lahdan, Zakhira Football playground, Zakhira Mosque, Zakhira Port and Zakhira Girls Centres.

Sheikh Saoud expressed happiness about laying the foundation stone of the Zakhira Youth Centre, which is being built by the QOC Engineering Projects Department. It is expected to be completed in 15 months.

The step comes in the light of the QOC priorities to look after the younger generation by providing them with the sports facilities where they can develop their sports abilities. It is in accordance with the directions of HH Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, the Heir Apparent and President of the Qatar Olympic committee.

Mr Lemke expressed his pleasure for participating in the ceremony and lauded the special interest Qatar is showing towards the youth and for developing sports facilities.

Engineer Hamad Lahdan Al Mohannadi, Director of the project, said that the new youth centre would serve the people of Zakhira and would include playgrounds for football, handball and volleyball in addition to halls for snooker and table tennis, and a gymnasium.

In addition, the new project will include administrative offices, library, computer hall and a store for sports equipment.
