PyeongChang 2018 learns lots from Sochi 2014

21 Feb 2014
Sochi, Russia: For a 200-strong delegation from the host city of the next Winter Olympics, PyeongChang in Korea, the Sochi Games have been hugely enjoyable. More importantly, they have been hugely beneficial. “We have learned so much here,” said Park Yoon-june, Director General of the International Relations Bureau of the organizing committee for PyeongChang 2018.

“We have held the Summer Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 but we have not had such experience with the Olympic Winter Games. This is why we have had 200 observers here,” he added. “Some of them have been observing various aspects of the Games and others have been shadow observers, working on site and helping them and watching their operations.

“We have learned a lot about the general operations and also the detailed game management in each venue, so we are very grateful to the IOC and the Russian organizing committee for letting us observe all this.” On returning to Korea, the PyeongChang 2018 team will gather all the information and devise the functional plan on top of the master plan.

“We will consult with the IOC at the end of April and have a Coordination Commission meeting with the IOC, and in June there will be the Sochi debriefing meeting in PyeongChang,” he said.“The Russians are very organized and the Games are well organized. Before the Games there were issues over safety, security and organization but I have found it very satisfactory. There is no security problem at all.”

Park said he had also been impressed with the legacy of the Winter Olympics in the mountains, villages and down town, leaving Sochi and the region with a new city for tourism, winter and summer sports in this Black Sea resort. “There is all the infrastructure for road and railway. It’s astonishing.”
