Maldives marathon man Sharaf to train in Ethiopia

15 Dec 2015
Male, Maldives, December 15, 2015: The Maldives Olympic Committee has awarded a one-year scholarship to rising marathon star Ahmed Sharaf to train in Ethiopia, reports the Haveeru Media Group.

Sharaf will depart next week for Ethiopia, which is famed for producing long-distance runners such as Haile Gebrselassie, who holds the world record in marathon running.

Maldives NOC’s general secretary, Ahmed Marzooq, stated that the period of training may be extended based on the performance of Sharaf, who serves in the Maldives Police Force.

Sharaf finished second in the Dublin Marathon last October with a time of 2 hours 57 minutes, becoming the second Maldivian to finish a marathon in under three hours. The first Maldivian to accomplish the feat was national record holder Dr Hussain Haleem, who finished the marathon in the 1989 SAFF Games in 2 hours 45 minutes.

Sharaf described the scholarship as a new beginning and vowed to put in his best efforts to bring a good name to his country.
