Thailand sweeps individual woodball events

Phuket, Thailand: OCA Vice President Kanokphand Chulakasem was a happy man at the beach woodball venue at Karon Beach on Wednesday.

The competition came to a successful close with Thailand winning both the men’s and women’s individual titles, taking the hosts’ golden tally to six from the eight events. Vietnam and Indonesia also took home a woodball gold medal.

“Woodball has been in the Asian Beach Games from the first event in Bali in 2008, and since then the woodball association in Thailand has done very well to improve the athletes,” said Mr Kanokphand.

“In the second and third Asian Beach Games we enjoyed complete success by winning all the gold medals, and here we have won six of the eight events so I am quite satisfied.

“I would like to thank very much the president of the woodball association, the players and the volunteers for developing the game of woodball here in Thailand.”

Mr Kanokphand said the organising committee had received excellent support from the International Federation and the Asian Federation to ensure the smooth running of the competition. “The five days of the woodball competition have passed very quickly,” he added.

In the women’s event, Thailand won gold and silver through Chaithong Praewpan (206) and Buaklang Pornpimon (213). Chinese Taipei, the home of woodball, took the bronze with Chiang Fang-Yu (218). The total was composed of 10 rounds over the six-gate course.

Thailand also collected gold and silver in the men’s events thanks to Mongkholsamai Klayut (187) and Phromkaew Wattana (194). China’s Ye Qiwei won the bronze with 206.
