OCA Environment Committee congratulates Iran NOC

17 Jan 2014
Manila, Philippines: The OCA Environment Committee met at the Sofitel Hotel in Manila on Friday morning under its Chairman, Yu Kyung-Sun. In welcoming the members, Chairman Yu said the committee had a strong sense of responsibility to protect the environment in 2014 – an Asian Games year. The meeting heard a report from committee member Masato Mizuno on the IOC Sport and Environment World Conference in Sochi, Russia, last October, when one of the resolutions concerned food wastage.

“Athletes should adopt the principle of Think-Eat-Save – Reduce Your Food Print,” he said, encouraging athletes to take only the amount of food they can eat in dining halls to save on food being thrown away. Mr Haider Farman, Director of the OCA’s Asian Games department, suggested to representatives of the Incheon Asian Games Organising Committee that signs should be placed in the athletes’ dining hall to this effect during the Asian Games this September and October.

With the dining hall serving over 10,000 participants during the September 19-October 4 Incheon Asiad, this could have a big impact on food wastage, he said. The committee also congratulated Iran NOC for being awarded the IOC Sport and Environment Award for Asia with their Tochal Mountain Park project to transform a wasteland into an attractive park with mountain climbing paths for the public to promote a healthy lifestyle.

The Iran NOC’s Sport and Environment Commission overlooked the project from 2006 to 2013 and has also been active in tree-planting and producing manuals and textbooks to promote eco-issues. The committee heard reports from the Incheon Asian Games, Asian Winter Games 2017 in Sapporo and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games regarding sustainability and legacy, as well as a review of the 27th SEA Games in Myanmar last December. In response to a survey, 16 of the 45 NOCs in Asia reported on sport and environment activities, and the committee decided to discuss ways to improve this number while also establishing an OCA Sport and Environment Award.
