December 9, 2017, DHAKA: A two-member delegation of the Olympic Council of Asia is currently visiting Dhaka to organise the Fun Run ahead of the 18th Asian Games, which will be held in Jakarta-Palembang, Indonesia, from August 18 to September 2, 2018.

The Fun Run is a social event aimed at raising awareness about the Games, which will be held in Dhaka on December 11. Bangladesh will be the second country to hold the event after Pakistan, which hosted Fun Run in Lahore on Thursday.

The event in Dhaka will start at Bangladesh Football Federation premises in Motijheel before ending at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.

The OCA delegates, who included its media manager Jeans Zhou Jian and international relations official Elena Chakarova, visited Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) office, Bangladesh Football Federation and BNS prior to the event on Saturday.

“Fun Run is a long tradition of Asian Games. It has been organised since Doha Asian Games in 2006,” said Jeans.

“We had 28 different NOCs to participate in Jakarta 2018 Asian Games Fun Run. This is the second edition. The first one held in Lahore. Also for your information 2014 Inchon Asian Games, we hosted Fun Run in 28 NOCs, including Bangladesh,” he added.

Jeans, who also visited Bangladesh in 2014 for Fun Run prior to the meet in Inchon, South Korea, found this event as an opportunity to promote both the Games and Olympic movement.

“It’s a great programme to promote Asian Games and raise awareness about Asian Games among the public. And also it’s good for NOCs to raise awareness for themselves. Fun Run is not a competition. Fun Run is a social activity to get involved everyone, to promote Olympic movement, Olympic value, which is excellence, respect and friendship,” he said.

“Olympic Council of Asian wants the Asian Games fun run to be hosted in a colourful way and for this purpose, it is sending delegates to participating countries to motivate them. We have already completed out preparations to make this event successful,” he said.

“We have requested each federation to join the event with at least 10 participants. In addition to that players and coaches from different disciplines and some students will join the event,” he said.

OCA international relations officer Chakarova was impressed by their warm reception in Dhaka ahead of the event.

“This is my first Fun Run event and after Pakistan, this is the second country visiting I am visiting for this. For me it’s very interesting, you are a great host and I am waiting to see the event,” she said.

BOA Secretary General Syed Shahed Reza Chowdhury welcomed the OCA officials in its office and briefed them about Olympic activities in Bangladesh. Later, Bangladesh Football Federation General Secretary Abu Nayeem Shohag received the delegates at BFF house.

Fun Run will resume in Sri Lanka in January 2018 after Bangladesh event and run right through until July 18 in Jakarta – exactly one month before the opening ceremony.

It will be the second time Indonesia will be hosting the Asian Games, following the fourth edition in Jakarta in 1962.
