Gwangju, Korea: The organising committee for the Universiade-Gwangju 2015, co-chaired by Kang Un-Tae and Chung Eui-Hwa, held a signing ceremony for the UNOSDP-Gwangju Summer Universiade 2015 Joint Project on July 10 at the Gwangju City Hall and launched a sports exchange programme for peace on the Korean peninsula. UNOSDP - United Nations on Sport for Development and Peace - is the UN's sports policy executive body and, as the vehicle for fostering peace and development, has been organising sports activities in developing countries and countries in conflict.
Mr Kang Un-Tae signed the agreement with the UN's special adviser on Sport for Development and Peace, Wilfried Lemke, who will be implementing Inter-Korean sports exchanges for the formation of a Unified Korea team at the Gwangju Universiade 2015.
It is the first agreement between the Untied Nations and a sports organising committee in Asia, with UNOSDP serving as the direct mediator and providing support for peace on the Korean Peninsula. Under the Agreement, UNOSDP and Gwangju Universiade Organising Committee (GUOC) will host inter-Korean sports exchanges.
Under the mediation of UNOSDP, through regular sports exchanges until the year 2015, GUOC plans to form a Unified Korean team in at least two sports at the Gwangju Universiade 2015.
