Kickboxing reflects on the rise of Vietnam at 4th AIMAG

15 Jul 2013
Tehran, Iran: Kickboxing at the 4th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Incheon, Korea, from June 29 to July 6 enjoyed tremendous success under the management of Nasser Nassiri, WAKO Vice President and President of WAKO Asia, the kickboxing organisation said in a press release. WAKO Asia had previously organised kickboxing competitions at the 2009 Asian Indoor Games in Vietnam, 2009 Asian Martial Arts Games in Bangkok and 2007 Asian Indoor Games in Macau.

Kickboxing brought to Incheon 93 athletes representing 15 National Olympic Committees, including Korea, Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, Mongolia, Syria, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.

Another entry was Vietnam, which had made its kickboxing debut in January 2009 when WAKO Vietnam was founded by Nasser Nassiri. Their progress during the past four years enabled Vietnam to claim three gold medals at the 4th AIMAG: Nguyen van Su (men’s point fighting -74kg), Nguyen Thi Tuyet Mai (women’s full contact -56kg) and Nguyen Thi Tuyet Dung (women’s low kick -52kg).

Apart from the performances - both from a technical and fighting spirit perspective - of the Vietnamese athletes, the most surprising thing was the interest that the kickboxing event stirred up in many Asian Olympic leaders and the Incheon Asian Games Organizing Committee (IAGOC).

Mr Nassiri, together with his team - in particular the leaders of WAKO in Korea (Sun-taek Kong and Enucheon Jeong) - did an excellent job of running the show during the four days of competition.

Once again Mr Nassiri brought the competition to a successful conclusion, without mishaps and with a well-balanced distribution of the medals, showing that kickboxing in Asia is very much alive and kicking throughout the continent.
