Governor Ishihara completes Tokyo 2016 delegation in Lausanne

12 Jun 2009

Led by Dr Ichiro Kono, Chair and CEO of Tokyo's 2016 Olympic Bid Committee, a high-level delegation departed for Lausanne, Switzerland, ahead of a presentation to the International Olympic Committee.

Shintaro Ishihara, President of Tokyo 2016 and Governor of the world’s largest city, joins the team who will share their passion for hosting the world’s greatest sporting event during the 2016 Candidate Cities Briefing.

This first appearance for the Governor in front of the IOC outside Tokyo, after playing a key role in the IOC Evaluation Commission visit in April, further demonstrates the determination within Tokyo and Japan for hosting the 2016 Games.

Several years ago, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government began setting aside funds to cover Olympics-related infrastructure investment; with $4 billion now in the bank, Tokyo offers a financial guarantee that only the biggest city budget in the world can provide.

Governor Ishihara is joined by IOC Vice President Chiharu Igaya, IOC Member Shun-ichiro Okano, Tokyo 2016 Chair and CEO Dr. Ichiro Kono, Japanese Olympic Committee President Tsunekazu Takeda, Tokyo 2016 Deputy Director General Hidetoshi Maki and Tokyo 2016 Athletes’ Commission Chair and Olympic medallist Mikako Kotani.

Dr Kono said: “Governor Ishihara completes a strong Tokyo 2016 team heading to Lausanne.

Under his leadership, the city of Tokyo has undertaken a major transformation plan that will be completed in 2016 in perfect timing for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Tokyo will become even more accessible, greener and healthier, with the Olympic Games as the catalyst to maximize positive change and a lasting legacy for all."

The Olympic Museum in Lausanne will host the 2016 Candidate Cities Briefing
for IOC Members on June 17-18. This briefing has been organised to permit the 2016 Cities to inform all IOC voting members on the technical aspects of their bid and to give IOC members an opportunity to put questions to the cities on their bids prior to the IOC Session in October.

On June 18, each city will have a separate room in the Lausanne Palace Business Centre where it can display models, show bid videos and answer further questions.
