Athletes from Kuwait: The men with the golden guns

19 Nov 2010
Guangzhou, China: Kuwaiti marksmen rose to the occasion in front of OCA President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah by collecting two gold medals and one silver in the 16th Asian Games shooting competition on Friday. Representing Athletes from Kuwait, Naser Meqlad recorded a golden double by winning the men's trap individual and the men's trap team along with Abdulrahman Al Faihan and Khaled Al Mudhaf, who won the silver medal in the individual event.

Meqlad, who became the first Asian Games men's trap repeat champion after his victory at Doha 2006, spoke of another celebration after his golden success. "I am very excited now because the match is over and I won the gold medal," he was quoted as saying by the Asian Games News Service. "I am going on my honeymoon in Kuwait. My wife and I got married just one month ago."

Asked how he would celebrate, he replied: "I still have some interviews tonight. Tomorrow I will go shopping in Guangzhou." It was the fourth gold medal in the men's trap team event in Asian Games history for Athletes from Kuwait.

Lebanon's Joe Salem had to settle for bronze in the men's individual after leading qualifying but earlier took silver in the team trap with Al Yazgie and Joseph Ishaya Hanna.

Sheikh Ahmad presented the team gold medals to the Athletes from Kuwait, who are competing under the IOC flag as their National Olympic Committee is suspended, and then asked organisers for a few practice shots himself!
