Moscow, Russia: His Excellency Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah was elected President of the Association of National Olympic Committees on the opening day of the 18th ANOC General Assembly in Moscow on Friday.

A total of 203 National Olympic Committees attended the General Assembly and Sheikh Ahmad gained a landslide 174 votes. There was only one vote against and two abstentions.

“Thank you for inviting me to this ANOC General Assembly,” said Sheikh Ahmad, President of the Olympic Council of Asia.

“I have learned a lot from our meetings and received different opinions, comments, questions and proposals.

“Together with the Executive Council and all NOC members I can continue to build and develop the Olympic Movement as President of ANOC.

“This is a big responsibility for me, and many things we should do together after the success of our first President, Mr Mario Vazquez Rana. I want to be a coordinator between all of our NOCs and Executive Council colleagues.

“I promise I will work hard and work closely with you, and will be open for communication. With our unity and solidarity we can achieve success.

“We are proud of being part of the sports and Olympic Movement. Let’s continue our success story. Let’s continue what our ex-president and colleagues have done. Let’s continue to work hard and move forward for our future generations.”

IOC President Dr. Jacques Rogge and the President of the Russian Olympic Committee, Alexander Zhukov, also attended the General Assembly and gave their speeches in the opening ceremony.
