Nikpah earns bronze for Afghanistan

London, England: Afghanistan joined the medal rankings at the London Olympic Games on Thursday when Rohullah Nikpah overcame Great Britain's Martin Stamper 5-3 to win the bronze medal in the men’s -68kg taekwondo. Nikpah became Afghanistan’s first Olympic medallist in any sport when he took bronze in the 58kg class at Beijing 2008. In the final, Turkey's Servet Tazegul won gold by defeating Iran’s Mohammad Motamed Bagheri, 6-5.

Iran now has four gold, four silver and one bronze medal for nine medals in total. In the women’s -57kg class, Jade Jones of Wales landed Britain's first taekwondo Olympic gold with a stunning victory over world champion Hou Yuzhuo of China. Tseng Li-Cheng of Chinese Taipei won a bronze.

Elsewhere at the ExCeL Arena on Thursday, Saori Yoshida won her third successive Olympic gold to maintain Japan's dominance of women's wrestling after they had won both gold medals on the opening day of competition Yoshida beat Canada's Tonya Lynn Verbeek 3-0 2-0 in the final of the 55kg weight category.

Japan now has five gold medals, 14 silver and 14 bronze for 33 in total. The silver medals include the women’s football team, after Japan’s world champions were beaten 2-1 by USA in the gold medal match at Wembley Stadium on Thursday evening. At the end of Day 13, USA leads the rankings with 39 gold and 90 medals in total, with China in second place on 37 gold and 80 total medals with three days of competition remaining.
