Qatari fencer comes out on top

Manama, Bahrain: Qatari fencer Mohammed Mirza won the men’s seniors title at the Bahrain National Day Fencing Championship, organised by the Bahrain Fencing Association in Um Al Hassam. Mirza came out on top after a stiff battle with Bahraini opponents Hamad Khalifa, Salman Yousef and Mohammed Saleh, who finished from second to fourth, respectively.

In the women’s section, Bahraini Fadwa clinched the trophy followed by compatriot Rawan in second place. Haya Al Dossary rounded off the podium by coming third overall. In the juniors’ event, Yousef Salman clinched victory and the gold medal, beating another Bahraini entrant, Hamad Khalifa. Hamad Fares and Mohammed Salman, both representing Kuwaiti club Al Qadsia, shared the bronze medal.

A total of 45 fencers took part: 18 in the men’s seniors, 11 women and 16 juniors. The finals were followed by the prize presentation ceremony, held under the patronage of Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) general secretary Shaikh Ahmed bin Hamad Al Khalifa, who honoured the winners in each competition.

Bahrain Fencing Association President Shaikh Ebrahim bin Salman Al Khalifa praised  the support of BOC President Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa for this event, which marked Bahrain’s National Day celebrations and the 13th anniversary of His Majesty King Hamad’s accession to the throne.
