‘Sport and Family’ is the new theme of QOC’s SOP

03 Jul 2011
Doha, Qatar: “Sport and Family” has been chosen by the Qatar Olympic Committee as the new theme for the fifth edition of its Schools Olympic Program (SOP). The theme highlights the significant relationship between sport and the family in which sport plays a role in helping families achieve their objectives and elevates the efficiency of an individual.

The selection was carried out through a voting process, with the participation of about 344 QOC employees. “Sport and Family” came in ahead of other themes “Sport and Peace” and “Sport and Energy”.

SOP is a pioneer initiative of HH the Heir Apparent Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, who is also President of QOC, in an attempt to connect sport and encourage school students to practise sport as an integral part of their daily life.

After the launch in 2007 under the theme Sport For Health, SOP received an overwhelming response from local and international dignitaries. The theme changed to Sport and the Environment, Sport and Culture and Sport and Education for the ensuing years.

SOP is an annual event jointly organised by the QOC and the Supreme Education Council. All local schools participate and the students compete in athletics, football, volleyball, basketball, handball, table tennis, fencing, gymnastics and swimming.

The formation of the Schools Sports Federation in April last year was an outcome of the commendable success of the SOP.
