Manama, Bahrain: Athletes from Qatar and Iraq took home the gold medals at the National Day Fencing Championships in Bahrain on Saturday, December 7. The event was held at the Bahrain Handball Association gym in Um Al Hassam and marked Bahrain's National Day celebrations. Fencers from 12 countries took part in three categories.

The Qataris dominated the show, winning the floret and sabre competitions, while the Iraqis took the epee gold.

In the floret, Qatari Fatma Al Mannai came out on top, beating compatriot Lulia Ali Hassan 15-4 in the final. Bahrain’s Maryam Mohammed rounded off the podium along with Tajikistan's Bobodzanova Maniza.

Another Qatari, Nasser Awad Al Anezi, clinched the second gold medal for his nation, this time in the sabre after defeating Kuwait’s Khalid Al Shamlan 15-13. Ammar Al Amari of Kuwait and Iraqi Hamza Habib Mohsin shared the bronze medal.

Bahrain had big hopes on Mohamed Salman, who reached the final of the epee class but lost to Iraq's Abdulwahed Mohsin. The bronze medal was shared by Ahmed Al Hussain of Saudi Arabia and Abdulrahman Adel Al Hashmi of Qatar.

The awarding ceremony was held under the patronage of Bahrain Olympic Committee acting general secretary Abdulrahman Askar.

Askar, along with Bahrain Fencing Association President Shaikh Ebrahim bin Salman Al Khalifa, presented medals and cash awards to the top three fencers in each class.
