Japan NOC organises Tokyo parade

14 Sep 2012
Tokyo, Japan: The latest edition of the International Olympic Committee’s weekly highlights news bulletin reports that close to half a million people came out to cheer the Japanese Olympians during a parade in Tokyo. The Japanese NOC, whose President is IOC member Tsunekazu Takeda, reports that an enthusiastic crowd of almost 500,000 greeted the 71 Japanese Olympic medallists on their return from London.

This is the first time that such a parade has been organised, to express the nation’s thanks to its athletes for their performances in London. A number of Olympians have also visited the areas affected by the March 2011 tsunami to meet and encourage the local population.

Japan finished in 11th place in the London 2012 medals table with seven gold, 14 silver and 17 bronze medals for a total of 38 medals.
