19 May 2011
Ashgabat, Turkmenistan: The OCA’s Daimler Street Football project kicked off Thursday in Ashgabat, the capital city of Turkmenistan. The Chairman of Ashgabat City Sports Committee, Mr. Muhammed Keshikov, Turkmenistan National Olympic Committee Secretary General Mr. Azat Muradov and Mr. Vahid Kardany, from the Olympic Council of Asia’s technical department, attended the opening ceremony.

On behalf of the OCA, Mr. Kardany expressed his appreciation to Ashgabat City Sports Committee and Turkmenistan National Olympic Committee.

He said: “I have confidence it will be a success with all the excellent organisation work of the Turkmenistan NOC and Ashgabat municipal government.

“I hope Daimler Street Football in Ashgabat could not only further develop grassroots sports activities and a healthy lifestyle for all the young generation, but also help Turkmenistan identify some future football talent.”

All 16 teams from the Secondary Sports School for Kids and Youth (Tourism and Sports Ministry) and Football Sports School (Ashgabat City) played in today’s eight play-off matches, and eight teams have qualified for Friday’s quarter-finals.

Turkmenistan is the third country in Asia hosting Daimler Street Football after its inauguration in Bhutan and Timor-Leste in April 2011.
