30 Asian NOCs benefit from Vision 2014

02 Jun 2014
Incheon, Korea: The results of the OCA-Incheon Vision 2014 programme will be on display when the 17th Asian Games are held in Incheon, Korea, from September 19 to October 4, 2014. Will the smaller National Olympic Committees who have benefited from Vision 2014 be celebrating gold, silver and bronze alongside the likes of China, Korea and Japan, or will the gap between the “haves” and “have nots” remain in the final medals table?

Vision 2014 is a joint initiative between Incheon Metropolitan City and the OCA. Backed by a US$20 million budget over eight years, the programme began in 2007 and offers assistance to NOCs who need help in closing the gap on the richer and more powerful teams at the Asian Games.

To date, 672 participants from 30 NOCs have joined 155 programmes under Vision 2014, including training camps in Incheon, Korean coach dispatch overseas in sports such as archery and taekwondo, and sports equipment support.

Members of the OCA Coordination Committee received an update on Vision 2014 during their meeting in Incheon on June 1, and heard that the programme will continue after the Asian Games to leave a lasting legacy throughout the Asian sports movement.

Vision 2014 will be promoted throughout the Asian Games, with a dedicated section on the official Asian Games News Service, and successful athletes from the programme will be highlighted. There is also a plan to host a Vision 2014 party for all participants who have joined in the activities since 2007.

Athletes from 24 NOCs, including Mongolia, Cambodia and Pakistan, have joined training camps in Incheon for sports such as weightlifting, taekwondo and archery, while seven NOCs, including Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Laos, have welcomed Korean coaches to train their athletes in a variety of sports, including boxing, archery, handball and taekwondo.

Regarding sports equipment, 22 NOCs, including Vietnam, Tajikistan and Philippines, have received support for archery, football, taekwondo and wrestling among other sports.
