India’s Nehwal collects badminton bronze on Day 8

London, England: India took their medal tally to three for London 2012 with a bronze for badminton queen Saina Nehwal when her Chinese opponent, Wang Xin, retired injured during their play-off at Wembley Arena on Saturday. Wang was leading 21-18, 1-0 but could not continue due to a knee injury, handing the 22-year-old Nehwal, from Hyderabad, the bronze medal to go alongside the silver and bronze already won by India’s male shooting team.

In the women’s singles final, China added another gold medal through Li Xuerui and also claimed the women’s doubles title thanks to Tian Qing and Zhao Yunlei. China won five gold medals on “Super Saturday” to move on to 25 gold, trailing USA by one gold.

The three other gold medals on Saturday for the Asian super power came in the women’s fencing team epee, Sun Yang in the men’s 1500m freestyle on the last day of swimming and Chen Ding in the men’s 20km race walk on The Mall. Kazakhstan picked up a fifth gold medal of the Games when Ilya Ilyin won the men’s 94kg weightlifting. Kazakhstan moved into eighth place in the medals table with their 5-0-0-5 haul.
