Philippines to host Asian Unity Games 2013

14 Jul 2011
Tokyo, Japan: Asia can look forward to a special celebration in 2013 when the Philippines hosts the Asian Unity Games. Mikee Cojuangco Jaworski, a member of the OCA Athletes’ Committee and gold medal-winning equestrienne at the 2002 Busan Asian Games, gave a presentation on behalf of the Philippine Olympic Committee at the OCA’s 30th General Assembly on Thursday.

She explained that the Asian Unity Games 2013 would celebrate the 100th anniversary of Asia’s multi-sports games, and would give athletes and officials the opportunity to reaffirm bonds made through sport.

With the attendance of 45 countries and regions, the Asian Unity Games will celebrate sport, culture and history. A varied programme of sports events will take place at Clark, the former American air base near Angeles City, and on the holiday island of Cebu.

Other activities will include the establishment of an Asian Sports Hall of Fame and a VIP golf tournament.

Although the exact dates have not been finalised, it is planned to hold the Asian Unity Games in the last week of November and the first week of December 2013.

Speaking at a press conference following the General Assembly, OCA President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah told members of the media that the Asian Unity Games 2013 would be a special occasion for the Asian sports family.

“Asia’s sport games began with the Oriental or Far Eastern Games in the Philippines in 1913, and then we had the West Asian Games,” he said.

“The east and west became united in 1951 with the first Asian Games, so the Asian Unity Games will be the anniversary of 100 years since the first games were held in Asia. It is not a new event for the OCA, it is a special occasion.”
