Maldives NOC congratulates 24-hour ultra-marathon man Ahmed Athif

04 Jan 2016
Male, Maldives, January 4, 2016: The Maldives Olympic Committee met with the Runners Maldives team on Sunday, January 3 to discuss recent accomplishments and the possibilities of future support through the NOC.

The meeting was held between the NOC Secretary General, Ahmed Marzooq, and extreme endurance athlete Ahmed Athif, who completed a 24-hour ultra-marathon in the Maldives a few days ago. Ahmed Athif’s coach, Naseer Ismail, and the technical official of Runners Maldives also joined the meeting.

Marzooq congratulated the runners for their accomplishment and offered them encouragement for their future endeavours.

Coach Naseer said that the NOC was the first sports body in the Maldives to meet with the team and to congratulate them. Naseer further stated that, although the event was a success, they faced many difficulties in organising and completing the event. In response to this, the Maldives NOC offered to assist the runners in future events.

Athif, who ate three light meals during the 24-hour marathon and completed a distance of 145.8km, said he received tremendous support from the Maldives Police Service.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the overwhelming support from each and every one of you that lifted me up and kept me going forward to complete the first 24 Hour Run in the ?‎Maldives,” he said on his Facebook page.

“This run was a team effort, and all I could have done by myself was dream of finishing. We finished it together! We made history together!

“Thanks to my fellow runners in Runners Maldives, friends, family, the big family of runners, and work colleagues who joined to run with me, kept checking on me and cheered me on through the longest 24 hours of my life.”
