10 Aug 2012
London, England: Bahrain’s two-time world champion Maryam Yusuf Jamal put the Kingdom on the medals table at the Olympic Stadium on Friday night by winning bronze in the women’s 1500 metres behind a Turkey 1-2. The 27-year-old Jamal was world champion in 2007 and 2009 and won the Asian Games gold medal at Guangzhou in 2010.

She finished fifth in the 1500 at Beijing in 2008 but raced to a place on the podium in London to earn Bahrain a first medal of the 2012 Olympics. Elsewhere on Friday, fifth-placed Korea won its 13th gold medal of the Games through Hwang Kyung Seon in the women’s welterweight (-67kg) taekwondo.

Hwang, 26, not only defended her title from Beijing 2008 but also became the first woman to win taekwondo medals at three consecutive Olympic Games after earning a bronze at Athens 2004. Elsewhere on Friday, Shinichi Yumoto of Japan and DPR Korea's Yang Kyong Il claimed the two bronze medals on offer in the men’s 55kg freestyle wrestling weight category.

Iran moved on to 4-5-1 (10 total medals) with a silver in freestyle wrestling (74kg) for Sadegh Saeed Goudarzi. Uzbekistan took a bronze in the same event through Soslan Tigiev and also won a bronze medal in men’s middleweight (75kg) boxing with Abbos Atoev.

Uzbekistan has now won three bronze medals in three different sports. Mongolia moved their medals count to 0-1-3 with a bronze in men’s light welterweight (64kg) for Munkh-Erdene Uranchimeg. At the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, Korea beat Japan 2-0 in the men’s football bronze medal match. At the end of Day 14, USA leads the rankings with 41 gold and 94 total medals, ahead of China with 37 gold and 81 total medals.
