Nanjing, China: The Olympic Council of Asia’s visit to Nanjing, China, wrapped up on Saturday morning with a tour of the Olympic Sports Centre and Athletes’ Village for the 2nd Asian Youth Games in August 2013. First port of call was the Olympic Sports Centre, which was built for the 10th National Games in 2005. With a seating capacity of 60,000, the Main Stadium is just one of four venues inside the vast complex. There is also an Indoor Stadium seating 10,000, an aquatic centre which can accommodate 4,000 spectators and a tennis stadium.

Representing the OCA, Bahram Afsharzadeh, Chairman of the OCA’s Information and Statistics Committee, said he was very impressed with the venue.

“I think Nanjing is ready to stage the Asian Youth Games in 2013,” said Bahram, who is Secretary General of the NOC of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

“The facilities are beautiful and modern. The 10th National Games of China were held here only six years ago and they have hosted many other sports events since then. The Main Stadium itself is fantastic.

“On behalf of the OCA President, His Excellency Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, I would like to congratulate Nanjing on their preparations and thank them for the hospitality.”

From the Olympic Sports Centre the delegation moved to the Athletes’ Village, located at the Nanjing Audit College in the Pukou district, south west of Nanjing. It is 17km from the Olympic Sports Centre and 20km from downtown Nanjing.

The AYG Athletes’ Village can accommodate 3,500 athletes and team officials, with 2,400 beds for athletes, three people to a room, and 1,100 beds for team officials, two to a room.

With an abundance of sports and recreational facilities, lakes and landscaped gardens, the athletes will enjoy a fresh and green environment on the college campus.

Bahram commented: “I have visited many universities all over the world and this is the best. It is a beautiful and relaxing atmosphere, with the lakes and gardens, and the facilities are new and modern.

“I would like to thank the President of Nanjing Audit College and all his colleagues for making us feel so welcome on this tour.”

The 2nd AYG will run from August 16-24, 2013, and will be a dress rehearsal for the IOC’s 2nd Youth Olympics the following year.
