Lausanne, Switzerland: The bottom two teams from the FIVB’s 2012 World League men’s volleyball competition, Japan and Portugal, lost their places in the 2013 edition to challengers in the qualification process that ended September 9. In the final round of playoffs, World No. 14 Iran powered past 19th-ranked Japan with two 3-0 victories in Tehran, while the Netherlands squeaked past Portugal in a hard-fought series in Rotterdam.

Iran won the first match against Japan on September 7 by 25-19, 25-14, 25-23 and two days later by 25-16, 25-17, 25-21. The matches attracted 15,000 fans to the Azadi Hall in Tehran. The World League qualification process allows two teams the opportunity to challenge for the right to play in the annual men’s competition.
