Maldives NOC General Assembly

Male, Maldives: The Elective General Assembly of the Maldives Olympic Committee was held at the Nassandhura Hotel in the capital Male on July 10. The President, Mr. Ibrahim Ismail, welcomed everyone to the meeting and wished all candidates the best of luck. Mr. Ismail said the most important reason for the meeting was to elect the Ex-Co members for the term 2013- 2017.

All 15 full member sports associations attended. Triathlon and Rowing will be added as full members for the next General Assembly on March 30, 2014.

Mr. Ismail also told the members that, based on the Olympic Charter (Rule 28.1.3) and the recent correspondence between the IOC and Maldives NOC, two (one male and one female) elected representatives of athletes having participated in at least one of the last three editions of the Olympic Games should be included as voting members of the General Assembly.

The General Assembly agreed to refer the proposal to the Maldives Olympians Associations to elect the two Olympic athletes. Candidates for the position of Maldives NOC President: Mohamed Mahid Shareef (7 votes) and Mohamed Shaweed (8). Decision: Mohamed Shaweed. Candidates for the position of Vice President: Ahmed Hafiz (6), Mohamed Abdul Sattar (9). Decision: Mohamed Abdul Sattar.

Candidates for the position of Secretary General: Mohamed Riyaz (7), Ahmed Marzooq (8). Decision: Ahmed Marzooq

Candidates for the position of Treasurer: Hussain Rasheed (8), Musthafa Mohamed (7). Decision: Hussain Rasheed.

Candidates for Ex-Co members (Olympic team sports), two positions: Handball (8), Volleyball (7), Basketball (15). Decision: Handball and Basketball.

Candidates for Ex-Co members (Olympic individual sports), three positions: Tennis (8), Badminton (15), Table Tennis (15), Athletics (7). Decision: Tennis, Badminton and Table Tennis.

Candidates for Ex-Co members (non-Olympic sports), two positions: Cricket (4), Chess (12), Netball ( 7), Surfing (7). Decision: First Round - Chess. Netball and Surfing went to the second round. Surfing (9), Netball (6). Decision: 2nd Round - Surfing

Candidates for Ex-Co members (women), two positions: Aishath Afra Mohamed (Cricket) Aminath Shazlyn (Athletics) automatically elected as only two candidates.

The newly elected President, Mr.  Mohamed Shaweed, thanked everyone for their support and promised to work non-stop, hand in hand with all the federations. Mr. Ibrahim Ismail the former president, congratulated the new Ex-Co members and wished them the best of luck for the next four years. Mr. Ismail thanked the President of the Olympic Council of Asia, H.E. Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, for his contribution to the Olympic Movement in Asia and especially Maldives.

He also was very grateful to the IOC and Olympic Solidarity  for their cooperation with the Maldives NOC. The Elective GA of the Maldives NOC was conducted in a fair environment in a democratic manner in the presence of media, representatives of the Sports Ministry and the sports federations of Maldives. The results were accepted by all the candidates.
