Oman NOC plans to enter 10 sports at 18th Asian Games 2018

Muscat, Oman, January 22, 2018: Oman is aiming to field teams and athletes in 10 disciplines at the Olympic Council of Asia’s 18th Asian Games in Indonesia this summer, reports the Times of Oman. According to a statement issued by the Oman Olympic Committee, the OOC’s Planning and Follow-up Committee made their initial recommendation of targeting participation in 10 sports at the Asiad after a recent meeting.

The committee met under the chairmanship of Sheikh Saif bin Hilal Al Hosni, OOC Vice Chairman and Chairman of Planning and Follow-up Committee.

For the first time in OCA history, the Asian Games will be held in two co-host cities – the Indonesian capital of Jakarta and Palembang, capital of South Sumatra province. They will take place from August 18 to September 2 and involve 10,000 athletes from the OCA’s 45 National Olympic Committees in 40 sports, 67 disciplines and 462 events.

As per the OOC Planning and Follow-up Committee’s initial recommendations, the 10 sports are: athletics, swimming, shooting, football, beach volleyball, tennis, sailing, hockey, weightlifting and paragliding. The Planning and Follow-up Committee also discussed Oman’s participation in the IOC’s 3rd Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, this October.

The committee recommended Oman’s participation in three sports - athletics, swimming and sailing, subject to the respective teams’ qualification for the YOG.
