World Triathlon Series to kick off in Abu Dhabi

28 Feb 2018
Abu Dhabi, UAE, February 28, 2018: A world-class field is set to tackle a 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run on Friday, March 2, to kick off the 2018 World Triathlon Series season in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The season will feature stops in Bermuda, Yokohama, Leeds, Hamburg, Edmonton and Montreal and will finish in September at the Grand Final in the Gold Coast, Australia.

The new season will also mark the start of the road to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, with the qualifying period starting in May 2018.

Women's Preview

Wearing the golden No. 1 in WTS Abu Dhabi will be double world champion Flora Duffy of Bermuda. After a stunning 2017 season that saw her on top of the WTS podium in six out of nine races, Duffy is looking forward to making her debut on the iconic Yas Island course in Abu Dhabi.

She will have some stiff competition, though, including the winner of 2017 WTS Abu Dhabi, Andrea Hewitt of New Zealand, and last year’s World Championship runner-up, Ashleigh Gentle of Australia. Carrying the USA flag will be compatriots currently ranked third and fourth in the world, Katie Zaferes and Kirsten Kasper.

Men's Preview

The star-studded line-up will feature double world champion and 2016 WTS Abu Dhabi winner Mario Mola. One of his biggest rivals will be Britain’s two-time Olympic medallist Jonathan Brownlee, who returns to the WTS competition after finishing in sixth place last season.

Mola and Jonny Brownlee will be joined by more world-class competition such as Norway’s Kristian Blummenfelt, who was one of the ITU breakout stars after finishing third in the overall ranking, and South Africa’s Richard Murray, who has just started his season with victory in the first World Cup race of the 2018 season in Cape Town.
