Maldives NOC welcomes home hero solo sailor

09 Mar 2016
Male, Maldives, March 9, 2016: Maldives national sailing team member Abdul Ghafoor Moosa returned to the capital Male on Tuesday, March 8, after completing his journey to sail around Maldives in just 38 days. Ghafoor, who has won numerous awards in international sea sports events, began his trip on January 31 and since then has been travelling solo from one atoll to another on a catamaran.

This has made him the first Maldivian to complete the journey of sailing around the Maldives. The objective of this expedition was to promote sailing as a sport to the Maldivian youth. With the mounting attention in Ghafoor’s sailing exploits, this objective has been achieved as there are many children and youth who are now showing an interest in water sports.

Maldives Olympic Committee congratulates Ghafoor for his challenging endeavour in crossing 1,100 miles and for promoting sea sports in the Maldives.
