19th Official Asian Games Fun Run in Sanaa, Yemen
13 Mar 2006
Over three hundred people sprinted to the finish line outside the main stadium in Al Thawrah Sports Complex today as part of the 19th Official Asian Games Fun Run. The Fun Run celebrated sport in Asia and highlighted the 15th Asian Games Doha 2006.
Organised by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and the Yemen Olympic Committee, the fun run was open to all ages as well as special needs athletes, encouraging lots of people to take part.
A little rain that started just before the fun run did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of the participants who enjoyed running in the rain. The sun appeared just in time for the medal presentations with a rainbow creating a stunning backdrop for the proceedings. The winners from each race were presented with their medals from Husain Ali Al-Musallam, Director General, OCA, Dr. Moosa Abbas, Director, UAE National Olympic Committee and Mr. Mohammed Al Ahjri, Director General, Yemen Olympic Committee, Mr Abdul Hameed Al Saidi, Representative for the Ministry of Youth and Sport.
VIPs from the Disability federation, Body building Federation and Handball federation also attended the event.
Each entrant that took part was rewarded with a certificate of achievement and a limited edition 15th Asian Games t-shirt from the OCA.
The fun run attracted wide-spread press attention with local daily newspapers Al Thawra News and Al Gomhuryah both present at the event as well as Saba News agency which was filing stories for a number of other dailies in Yemen. Yemen TV also covered the event.
