Student sports games in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan: The Barkamol Avlod 2014 Sports Games for students of academic lyceums and professional colleges was held over three days recently in Namangan, with 20,000 spectators attending the closing ceremony at Navbahor Stadium, reports Uzbekistan National News Agency. The teams represented the Republic of Karakalpakstan and all the regions and the city of Tashkent, and these Games have produced many future national athletes in the Asian Games, Olympic Games and world and continental championships.

The team of the city of Tashkent won the highest number of medals, followed by the teams of Namangan and Samarkand regions.

A total of 996 students of lyceums and colleges took part in the following sports – basketball, volleyball, football, handball, chess, track and field, weightlifting, boxing, judo, WTF taekwondo, freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, swimming, tennis, table tennis and artistic gymnastics. A total of 652 gold, silver and bronze medals were on offer.

Alongside the sports games, numerous cultural events were organised, including meetings with celebrated athletes, writers and poets, culture and arts figures, as well as sightseeing across Namangan, the city of flowers.

The closing ceremony was attended by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Sh. Mirziyoyev.
