Indonesia targets 20 gold medals, Top 10 finish, at 18th Asian Games

08 Mar 2018
Jakarta, Indonesia, March 8, 2018: Indonesia has set a 20-gold medal target as it prepares to host the Olympic Council of Asia’s 18th Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang this August. Indonesia won only four gold medals at the 17th Asian Games in Incheon, Korea, in 2014 and finished 17th in the final medal rankings with 20 total medals, with the addition of five silver and 11 bronze.

The four gold medals came in badminton (2 – women’s doubles and men’s doubles), athletics (1 – women’s long jump) and wushu (1 – women’s nanquan). This year, however, Indonesia - as host country - has high hopes of improving significantly on this tally. The Minister of Youth and Sport, Mr. Imam Nahrawi, is hoping for a Top 10 finish by winning 20 gold medals – five times as many as four years ago.

The 18th Asian Games will run from August 18 to September 2 in Jakarta and Palembang, capital of South Sumatra province, with 10,000 athletes from the OCA’s 45 National Olympic Committees. There will be 40 sports and 462 events. In order to achieve this target of 20 gold medals, the Indonesian sports authorities have targeted 15 priority sports which they consider to be at a high level in Asia.

These include badminton, martial arts, rowing and sport climbing. The Ministry of Youth and Sport is working closely with the Indonesian Olympic Committee and the officials of each sport to develop a programme to achieve Indonesia’s target for the 2018 Asian Games. As the event’s host, the Sports Minister hopes that Indonesia will be successful in not only organising the Asian Games but also in winning medals, particularly gold.
