Koreans speed to third gold of Games

16 Feb 2010
Korea Republic claimed their third gold medal of the Winter Olympics on Tuesday when Lee Sang-Hwa won the women’s 500-metre speed skating title at the Richmond Olympic Oval. The 20-year-old Korean caused a stunning upset by beating German world record-holder Jenny Wolf by just five-hundredths of a second over the two runs.

Lee’s total time was 1 minute, 16.09 seconds, followed by Wolf with 1:16.14. China’s Wang Beixing took the bronze medal in 1:16.63 – a third medal of the Games for the People’s Republic after their 1-2 finish in the pairs figure skating the previous day.

The Koreans have now won three gold medals – two in speed skating and one in short track – and one silver medal, also in speed skating.

Until the Vancouver Games, Korea had not won a Winter Olympic gold in any event other than short track.
