Sapporo 2017 Official Report captures magic of 8th AWG

08 Nov 2017

Sapporo, Japan, November 8, 2017: Asia’s National Olympic Committees will be reliving the memories and the success of the OCA’s 8th Asian Winter Games in Sapporo, Japan, thanks to the publication this month of the Official Report.

The 8th AWG took place in Sapporo and Obihiro in February 2017 and were an outstanding success, attracting 30 NOCs from Asia plus two NOCs from Oceania, Australia and New Zealand, who sent guest athletes for the first time.

The venues, the competitions and the support of the local people made for a magnificent AWG just one year before the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, Korea, and the Official Report provides all the details of this success story over 371 pages.

The bilingual report - in Japanese and English - is truly a work of art, and covers 18 chapters in the Preparations and Operations section, plus an Overview, Sport by Sport Photo Gallery, Competition Results, Feedback from NOCs and much, much more.

In his opening message, the OCA President, HE Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah, says Sapporo has become the home of the Asian Winter Games, as this was the third time the 1972 Winter Olympics host had organised the OCA event, following the first two editions in 1986 and 1990.

“The organisation was perfect, as we expected; the venues were world-class, as we expected; and the support and enthusiasm of the local people was excellent, as we expected,” says Sheikh Ahmad.

“It will be hard to match the efficiency and the great success of Sapporo 2017 in the future, but this is our target in the next few years as we continue to develop and promote the winter sports movement and our Asian winter sports athletes, with the support of our NOCs and winter sport federations.”

The President of the Japanese Olympic Committee, Mr Tsunekazu Takeda, said the participation of guest athletes from Oceania added value to the AWG.
