DPRK to host international marathon to mark Day of the Sun

Pyongyang, DPR Korea: The IAAF-26th Mangyongdae Prize Marathon will be held in Pyongyang on Sunday, April 14 as part of the celebrations to mark the Day of the Sun (April 15) - the anniversary of the birth of President Kim Il Sung. In an interview with the Korean Central News Agency, Ham Chang Hyok - deputy department director of the Ministry of Physical Culture and Sports - said runners from 16 countries would take part, including Ukraine, Czech Republic, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Ethiopia. Around 600 local runners will also participate.

The athletes will run four circuits of a 10km course via the Arch of Triumph, Friendship Tower, Kumsong Street, Chongryu and Rungna bridges and Kumrung Tunnel, starting from Kim Il Sung Stadium. There will also be a half-marathon and a 10km race for juniors.

Several other sports events are being held in DPRK to mark the Day of the Sun, including the second round of the premier soccer league at Kim Il Sung Stadium and Sosan Football Stadium, as well as basketball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, shooting and cycling. "Besides, various sports games have been held at institutions, industrial establishments, co-op farms and universities,” reports KCNA. “The ongoing sports tournaments make the country seethe with holiday atmosphere.”
