IAGOC President starts Smart Torch Relay for 17th Asian Games Incheon 2014

01 Jun 2014
Incheon, Korea: Using the latest Smart phone technology, the Incheon Asian Games Organising Committee invited the world to share in the torch relay for Incheon 2014 at the new Asiad Main Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Led by IAGOC President Kim Youngsoo, members of the OCA Coordination Committee and Incheon citizens lined up in the middle of the football pitch and passed on the burning torch image via an app on their new Samsung Galaxy S5 units provided by the sponsors.

By downloading the Android app, sports fans around the world can now hold up the torch for the 17th Asian Games and share in the spirit of the OCA’s showpiece event, which runs from September 19 to October 4, 2014.

The ceremonial lighting took place during the halftime interval of the football friendly between Korea and Kuwait that kicked off the test events at the new main stadium. The OCA delegation was led by Coordination Committee Chairman Tsunekazu Takeda and Hon. Life Vice President Wei Jizhong.

The Smart Torch Relay App is in Korean, English, Chinese and Japanese and the functions include the online torch relay, games and a bulletin board and will be used to promote the Asian Games through social media.

The afternoon began with a tour of the Athletes’ Village and ended with a food tasting event at the Main Stadium, sampling a variety of dishes that will be available in the Athletes’ Village dining hall. The buffet offered 85 items and will have a five-day rotating menu.

Korea under-23s won the football match 2-1 thanks to a late penalty, sending the local fans home happy at the end of a landmark day for the OCA and IAGOC on the road to Incheon 2014.
