Yee targets Sapporo 2017, SEA Games 2017 and PyeongChang 2018

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, April 5, 2016: The Olympic Council of Malaysia is celebrating the fact that Julian Yee Zhi Jie became the first Malaysian to qualify for the ISU World Figure Skating Championships when he competed at Boston 2016 on March 31-April 1.Julian, 18, finished 22nd out of 30 competitors in the men’s short programme with 67.60 points to qualify for the free skate the following day.

Only the top 24 advanced to the free skate, and Julian finished one place higher than 2014 Sochi Winter Olympian Michael Christian Martinez of the Philippines (66.98). In the free skate, Julian was ranked 19th of the 24 skaters with 135.34 points. His combined score of 202.94 was a personal best and secured 21st place, two positions behind Martinez, who was 19th with 204.10.

Julian created many firsts for Malaysia and made all Malaysians proud of his achievements. He was the first Malaysian figure skater to obtain a quota place for the 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games, which took place at Lillehammer, Norway, in February.

He has also qualified for the World Championships in 2017, which is one of the qualifying rounds for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. His ultimate target is to be the first Malaysian figure skater to qualify for the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics.

Julian’s other targets are the 2017 Sapporo Asian Winter Games and, of course, the 29th SEA Games 2017 in Malaysia, where figure skating will be held for the first time in the history of the SEAP/SEA Games.
