Gold for Uzbekistan on Day 15
11 Aug 2012
London, England: Uzbekistan’s Artur Taymazov sealed his place in freestyle wrestling history by beating Davit Modzmanashvili of Georgia to win his third successive gold in the super heavyweight (120kg) division. Taymazov became the only wrestler in history to win three gold medals in the 120kg division, at Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2012. He also won a silver medal in the 130kg category in Sydney 2000.
It was Uzbekistan’s first gold of the Games to add to three bronze medals. An emotional Taymazov said afterwards: “It's a dream come true, a great moment for the Uzbek nation.” Iran's Komeil Ghasemi and Russian Bilyal Makhov won the bronze medals. In the boxing competition, China's Zou Shiming retained his light flyweight (49kg) title by defeating Thailand’s Kaeo Pongprayoon.
Zou, the top seed and world champion, followed up his success in Beijing four years ago with a 13-10 triumph over Pongprayoon. Thailand now has three medals in total: silver in boxing and weightlifting and bronze in taekwondo. Japan won its sixth gold medal of the Games through Ryota Murata in the men's middleweight (75 kg) boxing. After a poor first week with only two gold medals, Japan has bounced back in the second week with three women’s wrestling golds and Murata’s boxing gold.
Japan has won six gold, 14 silver and 17 bronze for 37 total medals, good enough for 11th place with one day remaining. In the men’s 10m platform diving, China’s world champion Qiu Bo had to settle for silver behind USA’s David Boudia. There was a bronze medal for India (0-1-4) for Yogeshwar Dutt in men’s freestyle wrestling 60kg, and for Iran’s Ehsan Naser Lashgari in the 84kg category.
Iran now has four gold, five silver and three bronze for 12 total medals. Heading into Sunday’s final day, USA has 44 gold medals and 102 in total, ahead of China (38 gold, 87 total). Great Britain is third with 28 gold and 62 medals in total.
