Wei stands down as Sports Committee chairman

29 Jun 2009
Veteran Chinese sports leader Wei Jizhong has chaired his last meeting of the OCA's powerful Sports Committee. Mr. Wei, who is 73 years old, has been chairman for 24 years, but resigned his post at the end of Monday's meeting in Singapore.

As president of the International Volleyball Federation, Mr. Wei spends most of his time at FIVB headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.

"So I decided to resign to give this position to the young generation, not the old generation," he told the committee members.

"This is the last meeting I will chair, so I would like to thank you for your support and for your confidence in me.

"I will say goodbye, and thank you very much."

As chairman of the Sports Committee, Mr. Wei has overseen the expansion of the OCA calendar to six events: Asian Games, Asian Winter Games, Asian Indoor Games, Asian Beach Games, Asian Martial Arts Games and Asian Youth Games.
