Manuel Silverio, Chairman OCA Media Committee
MVP, Fair Play awards criteria discussed

09 Apr 2010
Guangzhou, China: The OCA Media Committee took the first steps on the road to formulating a consistent policy for individual awards at multi-sports events during a meeting in Guangzhou on Friday. In a bid to encompass athletes who have the chance to win only one gold medal, as well as the multiple champions from the likes of swimming, the Media Committee decided criteria must be set.

The Media Committee felt that other OCA committees, particularly the Athletes’ Committee headed by Japan’s Olympic Games volleyball gold medallist Yuko Arakida, could play a leading role in the selection of the candidates for Most Valuable Player. It was recommended that a Technical Commission be appointed at each Games to analyse the results and draw up a shortlist of MVP contenders, from which the media could vote for a winner. The judgement of the Technical Commission experts and vote of the mass media would each account for 50 per cent of the final mark.

In the case of the Fair Play award, teams or individuals could be nominated based on a specific incident or on general sportsmanship and conduct.

The exact mechanics of the awards must be finalised and then approved by the OCA Executive Board and General Assembly in November, and it is hoped the first such award with the new format can be made at the 16th Asian Games from November 12-27, 2010.

In other Media Committee business on Friday, the committee set up three evaluation teams to inspect and monitor media services and facilities at the upcoming Asian Games in November, Asian Beach Games in December and Asian Winter Games in January 2011. The committee is drawing up a list of key aspects to produce a consistent Games look to the media services.
