Schools Olympic Program (SOP) at Qatar Sports Club
A very ‘special day’ in Qatar

10 Mar 2010
The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) hosted another successful Schools Olympic Program (SOP) at Qatar Sports Club on Thursday, March 4. Called "SOP Special Day 2010," the program -- held in conjunction with the Qatar Special Needs Federation – organises sports events for student athletes with disabilities.

Over 160 physically challenged students competed in a variety of sports, including track and field, softball and table tennis, and the QOC and SOP organising committee were delighted with the high number of participants.

“The Special Day is very important to the SOPOC. It is always inspiring to see athletes who overcome physical challenges to excel in sports,” said Hassan Al Mohammedi, Media Manager of SOP.

“The students here today are remarkable role models. They demonstrate the great things human beings are capable of.”

Dr Hassan Al Ansari, Secretary General of the Qatar Paralympic Committee, stressed that the Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver were about celebrating the achievements of physically challenged athletes rather than focusing on their disability.

“This is what we aim to honour today,” said Dr Hassan. “Our partnership with the QOC and the Schools Olympic Program is always a highlight on our calendar.”

In the QOC speech, Secretary General Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani said: “Every one of you who participated today demonstrates strength, courage and determination. Overcoming adversity is the true mark of a champion and I speak for everyone at QOC when I say that we are proud of what you have accomplished in life.”
